NeW Mochi Fundraiser and Social Oct. 6

Please stop by Mochi on University on Thursday Oct. 6 from 5-7pm and let them know you came because of NeW! :) (If you don't say NeW's name they won't donate!) NeW will be donating part of the proceeds to Peaceful Paths as a part of STRIVE's 20 days 20 ways campaign during October to help with the problem of domestic abuse in our community.

Also, after heading to Mochi, come to the 3rd NeW meeting of the semester! We would love to see you there! Check out our Facebook Event page for more updates about the fundraiser and meeting and contact NeW President Elizabeth Hebeler at emhebeler@ufl.edu if you have any questions. Thank you!

What did I miss? The ERA?

Thanks to all the new NeW faces that came to our second meeting this past week! We loved having you there and hope to see you at our next meeting on Oct. 6 from 7pm-8pm in Rinker 210.

If you had to miss because of an all important exam or other conflict, we talked all about the ERA, the Equal Rights Amendment, and were introduced to Mrs. Phyllis Schlafy (the writer of our book this semester). We discussed what it actually means for women, the history behind it and the fact that perceptions don't meet reality in this case. Take a look at the articles we read during the last meeting below. (We looked at pro and cons to have a critical discussion and broke up into 3 teams)

NeW Meeting: Thursday Sept. 22

Why has women's happiness been on the decline since the 1970s? Why is it supposedly bad to have it all? What do feminists want us to believe about ourselves, our career and our families? This week we are going to talk about the Equal Rights Amendment and the struggle between radical feminism and conservative women. It's going to introduce our book for the semester, The Flipside of Feminism, which will hopefully be shipped in by that time.

Don't forget to pay your NeW 2011-2012 dues: they are $25 for an entire year (think of it as $12.50 a semester) and includes a book, tshirt and other goodies. If you just want to be an active member but don't want the book or tshirt, then dues at $10. Please bring check to the next meeting made out to Network of enlightened Women or cash. Payment plans are available. :) And you don't have to commit right away, come visit us for a meeting and then join! :)

Please try to bring a friend and remember the meeting is in Rinker 210 starting at 7pm. Dessert will be provided! (Building Construction Building, go up the stairs and to the right if you are entering from Inner and Newell).

We can't wait to see you! :)

Constitution Day

Emily Jones, Service Officer of NeW, reads Constitution
Yesterday was Constitution Day and NeW at UF celebrated by helping to read in the Plaza of the Americas in front of Library West. We had a great time and got to read the 19th amendment about Women's Rights. There were other students, faculty, staff and members of the community that got to read-it was really neat seeing everyone come together. A group of kids from a local school also sang the preamble, which was one of our favorite parts!

Happy Belated Constitution Day!
Elizabeth Hebeler, NeW President, and Emily Jones, NeW Service Officer, read the 19th amendment

Thank you from NeW & Information on Be Real Speaker

NeW wants to start off by thanking everyone who came out to the first meeting! We had a great turnout and some very insightful discussion. We are looking forward to the next meeting on the 22nd, and we hope that all of you will be able to attend :) With that being said the following message is from a supporter of NeW-you should all check it out!

Monday night, September 19, at 7:00 p.m. there will be a Be Real speaker event in the Reitz Union Grand Ball Room. Sisters Helping Sisters Break the Mold Event will have two speakers. Allison Krieger Walsh, former Miss Florida and a Delta Delta Delta, and Dr. Wandler, eating disorder specialist at Shands, will be speaking to women about the dangers and prevalence of eating disorders on a college campus. Topics will include what the resources are on campus, how to recognize an eating disorder and how to reach out for help or talk to a friend.

Thank-you so much for your support, please contact me if you have any questions.

What's NeW?

The UF chapter of the Network of enlightened Women (NeW) is the premier organization for UF conservative women.

NeW was started as a book club in 2004 at the University of Virginia where its members could read about ideas and people often forgotten on college campuses. In addition to the book club, the UF NeW chapter engages in activities such as hosting speakers, holding debates, participating in philanthropic events and having social events like our annual Fall Tea Party.

If you are looking for a group of women who will challenge you to think beyond the teachings of the classroom and explore your own beliefs, inspiring you to take action...then NeW is the right organization for you!
